Where to go

All photography is done at the location of your choice. I've found that outdoor settings not only provide the best lighting but also a treasure trove of natural "props" that spark your child's imagination and help create great photos. Indoor locations with bright, natural lighting are also ideal for portraiture - or, best yet, a combination of both.

I have discovered a variety of great settings - two of my favorites are in Old Town Alexandria and central Washington, DC - and I can suggest indoor alternatives that offer the benefits of the outdoors when the weather won't cooperate. Of course, you may select a spot that you particularly like - your own backyard or a nearby park. A list of all possible locations for your custom session are reviewed and discussed once your session fee retainer and signed contract is received.

My fees include travel within 30 miles of my home. For locations outside of 30 miles, I will charge a reasonable mileage and time premium.

What to wear

I like to break all the rules of simplicity at times and encourage vivid colors and textures as well as the standard neutral colors. Please bring several changes of clothing which will give us some variety. I produce both color and black and white portraits so keep in mind some textures, colors, and patterns look better in one vs. the other - in general, bright whites and reds should be avoided.

If you have questions or can't decide, I can help you to choose the right wardrobe. Because we are capturing your child's imagination as well as his or her image, simple, timeless costumes that allow your child's spirit to shine through are also encouraged.

What to expect

Sessions are by appointment only and you will be my only appointment of the day. This ensures that I'm at my best, that our time together is relaxed, and that we capture the best time of day for lighting (usually early morning or late afternoon). Plan on about 90 minutes for your session. This includes a "warming up" session where I can develop a rapport with your child or children and build some trust.

It helps if you bring a favorite toy to help your child feel secure, or a favorite treat as bribes if necessary! Once your child gets comfortable in front of the camera - or even forgets it is there - I may ask you to step back or even be "out of sight" (but always nearby) so that your child might be less distracted and more apt to explore. (Even my own children are better models when Mom or Dad isn't right on hand - not easy when Mom's the photographer!). Of course, younger children may require a parent to be on hand at all times. If you have any special requests (siblings together, etc), please let me know at the beginning of the session so that we can work them in.

When proofs are viewed

Proofs will be presented within two weeks of your session. I offer on-line proofing and ordering so that you can view proofs at your convenience in your own home and can easily share them with grandparents or others who may also be interested.

If you'd prefer, printed proofs can be arranged, please inform me of this when you make your session appointment. Full payment is expected upon ordering.

Final processing of orders cannot be done until payment is made, without exception. Payment can be made by cash, check, or credit card. Please see the investment page for more information.
